Sutherland Trail
I am pleased to announce my Summer Expedition for 2009, The Sutherland Trail. This is a new Long Distance Trail that has just been put together by Cameron McNeish the editor of TGO and TV Presenter. The route was first featured in TGO and from the article I began my research into the trail.
The Sutherland area is North West Scotland and is also know as the 'Empty Lands'. It has a population of just over 12,000 (2004) and covers 5,500km².
The route is approximately 77miles however any peaks taken in will add to the distance. As the area is so remote I plan to wild camp for the duration of the Expedition. This will mean purifying all my drinking water, washing in mountain tarns and sleeping on hillsides.
The trail crosses between Loch Inver on the North West coast and the Kyle of Tongue on the North Coast, close to Ben Hope. I expect the trail to take 7-10 days, but as I'm not pushed for time I may spend some more time exploring!
Before I go to Loch Inver I will have been away for a while as I'm going on Scout Camp to Macclesfield, near the Roaches, and on a climbing course at Glenmore Lodge in Aviemore.
I'm expecting and hoping that this summer will be as good as 2008's. Although I won't be in a far flung part of India I will still be out on an expedition gaining experience for my mountaineering future and still experiencing a different culture. If you want more information about this expedition or anything to do with my summer 2009 plans feel free to email me at francis.charlesworth@hotmail.co.uk (I will be adding further, more detailed information on the route etc once I have finalised it)
